The Playboy of the Western World

By John Millington Synge

Directed by Gus MacDonald

Playing dates: 27th February – 9th March, 2019

Synge’s comic masterpiece is one of the great plays of Irish theatre. It has moments of comedy and pathos in almost equal measure and is – from the director’s personal experience –  a joy to perform in. There will be music involved and – as they say – the craic will be mighty.

Rehearsals will take place from the beginning of January 2019 onwards. Playing ages are indicative only and are flexible. However, Irish accents – the play is set in County Mayo – are a must.

Christy Mahon – a young man in his mid twenties to thirties. An absolute cracker of a role.

Old Mahon, Christy’s father

Michael James Flaherty, a publican – late middle aged

Margaret Flaherty, called Pegeen Mike, Michael’s daughter, and the bar-maid – anywhere around mid-twenties or thirties and fiesty

Shawn Keogh, a local farmer – who loves Pegeen

Widow Quin, a widow

Philly Cullen and Jimmy Farrell, farmers – any age

Sara Tansey, Susan Brady, Honor Blake, and Nelly, village girls

There are also various non-speaking roles available
